Many widespread statements of Landauer’s principle are shown to be special cases of our generalized principle. We demonstrate a physical process that can perform any computation without work requirements or heat exchange with the environment. This confirms conjectures made that all logical operations may, in principle, be performed in a thermodynamically reversible fashion, although logically irreversible operations would require special, practically rather difficult, conditions to do so. We derive the most general statement of Landauer’s principle and prove its universality, extending considerably the validity of previous proofs. Here we examine the thermodynamics of such operations in more detail, extending the work of Landauer to include indeterministic operations and to include logical states with variable entropies, temperatures, and mean energies. 36, 355 2005 it is argued that to properly understand the thermodynamics of Landauer’s principle it is necessary to extend the concept of logical operations to include indeterministic operations. Some alternative possible explanations for the alignment of the two arrows will be briefly discussed This conclusion does not automatically imply a psychological arrow can run counter to the thermodynamic arrow. It will be shown that any computational process that can take place in an entropy increasing universe, can equally take place in an entropy decreasing universe. The principal arguments put forward by Schulman and Hawking will be shown to fail. The purpose of this paper is to critically examine the support for the link between thermodynamics and an arrow of time for computers. Hawking (Physical Origins of Time Asymmetry, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1994) presents similar, if briefer, arguments. Schulman gives an explicit physical mechanism for this connection, based on the brain being representable as a computer, together with certain thermodynamic properties of computational processes. Schulman (Entropy 7(4):221–233, 2005) has argued that Boltzmann’s intuition, that the psychological arrow of time is necessarily aligned with the thermodynamic arrow, is correct. Fenyx (who can be customized to be either a male or female character) will find themselves quickly tasked by Hermes to not only explore the Golden Isle, which is packed with a wide variety of challenges, such as navigation puzzles that tests your speed from one point to the other, fresco puzzles where you slide blocks together to make images, or archery tests, which challenge how well you can aim and fire an arrow. The land is crawling with aggressive creatures, as well as mythical beasts and, to Fenyx's surprise, Greek gods. The ship is destroyed, leaving Fenyx shipwrecked on a mysterious location known as the Golden Isle. IMMORTALS: FENYX RISING is an open world action adventure role-playing game where players take on the role of Fenyx, a young sailor and shieldbearer that's part of their brother's crew returning home from battle, only to be caught in a massive storm. On the positive side, there's a heavy focus on character redemption, believing in your skills and abilities, and being positive in the face of overwhelmingly negative odds. Players can also purchase downloadable content (DLC) for additional expansions individually, or buy a season pass to unlock extra content as it's released. Players can also spend real money to earn in-game credits for customizable character, weapon, and mount skins for your tamed animals. There's also occasional use of "a-hole" in dialogue over the course of the game. There are also comments about Zeus drinking wine with Hades, but this isn't shown during play. While no nudity or sex is shown, there's a fair amount of innuendo mentioned by the deities in conversation and narration. While your customizable version of Fenyx (who can be male or female) will frequently fight mythical creatures, animals, and undead soldiers using swords, axes, arrows, and eventually godly abilities, no blood or gore's shown in battle, and enemies disappear into ash when defeated. The game centers around a young Greek soldier that's stranded on a magical island inhabited by gods and monsters. Parents need to know that Immortals: Fenyx Rising is an open world action adventure role-playing game for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, Google Stadia, and Windows PCs. Suffice to say that Dr Burns's kindly intentions aren't driven exclusively by virtuous professionalism, but in this environment victimhood isn't what it seems either. The characters may be smart, ambitious, scheming, troubled or (especially in Law's case) charming, but what they're not is selfless or "good". The film's mood of playfully sadistic knowingness as it teases and torments its way towards a brilliantly unexpected conclusion is key to its allure, as is its bracingly pessimistic view of human nature. Inevitably its effects aren't entirely as advertised, but Soderbergh and Burns are way ahead of the viewer and they've still got miles of twisty, hair-raising road to take us screeching around. Earnest discussion among the cast's stressed city-dwellers of favourite pill brand names - Zoloft, Celexa, the new-fangled Delatrex - is part of the film's mordantly satirical view of a not-entirely-sane world, and it's ultimately Ablixa (advertised in subway stations with the slogan "Take Ablixa today and take back tomorrow") that becomes Emily's prescription panacea. We learn that she's already had psychiatric treatment from Dr Victoria Siebert ( Catherine Zeta-Jones), and now she finds herself under the care of Dr Jonathan Banks (Jude Law, pictured above right).īanks, who isn't averse to slipping his own wife Deirdre (Vinesssa Shaw) a beta-blocker before she goes for an important job interview, is soon sizing up Emily for appropriate medication. Martin's return only seems to compound her confusion, prompting her to drive her car semi-suicidally into a wall (one of the script's neatest aperçus is the observation that "depression is an inability to construct a future"). Suddenly stripped of the dream lifestyle which Martin's market manipulations had paid for - luxury sailing yacht, waterside mansion, holidays in Maui - Emily has crashed to earth, reduced to a living in a one-room apartment and working in a design agency. His wife Emily (a feline and fascinating performance from Rooney Mara) is there to greet him at the prison gates, but his punishment has taken a heavy psychological toll on her. Their questionable ethics and business practices are none-too-subtly roped together with the excesses of the financial markets, since one of the protagonists, Martin Taylor ( Channing Tatum), is being released from prison after serving a four-year stretch for insider trading as the movie opens. Our subject at first seems to be the evils of Big Pharma, the giant drug corporations which seek to exploit human weakness and the stresses of 21st century life to keep their market share high and their stock prices soaring. (ii) the time wasted on deciding what to do. (i) the tough choices people make the road of life. Figuratively the choice of the road denotes: In the poem, a traveller comes to a fork in the road and needs to decide which way to go to continue his journey. On the basis of your understanding of the poem, answer the following questions by ticking the correct choice.Ī. The Road Not Taken Summary Questions and Answers The mood of the poem is philosophical and thoughtful as the narrator wonders whether his choice of the road he decided to travel upon had been the right one. He does not appear to like following the conventional path. It shows the poet as an adventurous man ready to take risks in life. He feels his life will be very different from others because he has always been tempted to take the path that is not generally followed by others. In the last stanza, the poet becomes philosophical when he talks about a future time when he would look back at the choices that he has made in life and their consequences. However, he decides to take the second path with the intention of walking on the first one sometime in the future.Īt the same time he knows that the chances of his returning that way are slim, especially as he is aware of the manner in which one path leads on to the other, taking the traveller far away from the main path. The second road appears to be less travelled and he is tempted to walk on it even though the first path also appears to have been left undisturbed for some time. He starts debating over the choice as he realizes he cannot walk on both. One day, while walking in a wooded area full of trees with yellow leaves, the poet comes to a fork in the road and has to decide which road he should take. This poem talks about the choices that one has to make in life and their consequences. The Road Not Taken Summary in English by Robert Frost The Road Not Taken Summary in English This might seem like a perfect storm of circumstances, but the fact is that this is very similar what most people go through when they develop depersonalization. It was profoundly depressing and upsetting. It seemed that no matter where I looked, I could either find no information on the condition at all, or terrifying portents of a future with no recovery on the horizon. Some of these people had had the condition for decades. As is standard for conditions on the anxiety spectrum, the forums were populated almost entirely by people who had not yet recovered from DP, but were actively exacerbating the condition by logging on to these sites every day in order to document their feelings. It was only through weeks and months of researching on the internet that, via a process of elimination and documentation, I was able to start to figure out what was happening to me.Īnd yet when I did find the websites that explained what I was experiencing, they were of almost no comfort whatsoever. Maybe I’d suffered a psychotic break? Would I ever be the same? It was terrifying to the point of incapacitation. At one point, with my mind frantically searching for answers for what I was experiencing, I began to seriously question if it was possible that I had actually died on that first night of the panic attack, and that I was now in some sort of purgatorial state. In fact, those few months before I started making my first tentative steps towards recovery were the toughest thing I’ve ever had to go through. To others I looked like I was ok, so surely these weird thoughts were surely a passing phase. When I tried to describe my symptoms to my family members, they were at a loss. Attempting to verbally define what I was feeling (being stuck behind a pane of glass, unsure if I was awake or dreaming) usually resulted in a conversation so outlandish that most people simply didn’t know how to react. Most people experience it briefly at one point or another in their lives, but for some it can become a chronic, terrifying and ongoing affliction. feeling as though you are not in control of your speech or your physical movements.feeling as though you are watching your thoughts, feelings and physical self, from outside of yourself.feeling as though you have become detached from the world.feeling as though you or the people around you are not real,. feeling as though you are in some sort of dream state,.It manifests in various ways but the most common symptoms are: What is depersonalization?ĭepersonalization is an anxiety-triggered feeling of being cut off from reality. I remember lying on my bed and thinking, “What have I done to myself?” As if I had personally brought the condition on or done something to deserve it. All I could do was focus intensely on this absolutely bizarre feeling that simply wouldn’t dissipate. The whole world seemed different, changed. When I began to experience it chronically and consistently, as a result of an intense panic attack (the first I’d ever had), it felt like I’d been shoved headfirst into some sort of alternate reality. Not in books, not in films, not even in my years of having a passing interest in psychology and spiritual practice. When I first experienced depersonalization, ten years ago, I knew nothing about it. |
